2019 Guy Breton Régnié
Region: Régnié, Beaujolais, France
Varietal: 100% Gamay
Style: Unfined / Unfiltered / Organic / Biodynamic / Native Yeast
Gang of Four producer Guy Breton, nicknamed P’tit Max, took over the family domaine from his grandfather at a time when the region was gravitating towards a uniform style. The widespread commercialization debased the appellation’s reputation, and Beaujolais came to be seen as one-dimensional and lacking any expression of native terroir. The grapes for this wine are sourced from the hills between the Côte de Brouilly and the Côte du Puy of Morgon, where the shallow soil of sand and stone create firm wines with more grip and acidity than traditional Morgon. Aromas of fresh red and blue fruits, candied flowers, and baking spices take on a smoky mineral flourish. Your glass will be empty before you know it, leaving you only with the spicy, mineral-laden aftertaste of a bottle that went down way too easily.
